Information for Prospective Students We are delighted that you are considering applying to Michigan State University's Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program! We are proud of our program and hope you will take some time to visit the rest of our website to learn more about what we have to offer. You may also obtain information or have questions answered by contacting either the Department or Clinical Program offices directly. Before you apply, please refer to the Application Information and Forms, linked to the left, to determine the materials that you need to include in your application. The Application Checklist summarizes these materials which include: the Application Checklist, a self-addressed, stamped postcard, the Department Application for Admission to Graduate Study in Psychology, the University Application for Admission to Graduate Study, the application fee (unless you completed the University Application online), a copy of Graduate Record Examination scores (General and Psychology Subject test), the Clinical Psychology Form, your personal statement (Statement of Purpose) including career goals, three letters of recommendation in sealed/signed envelopes from recommenders, all academic transcripts in sealed/signed envelopes from appropriate registrars, and any supplemental material (e.g., curriculum vita, writing sample). Please note that the application deadline is December 15th. Beginning in December, we review all applications. In January, we select approximately 30 students to invite for an on-campus interview. If you are invited to interview, we will try to arrange housing with one of our current graduate students to help keep your travel costs down. We will notify you as soon as possible of our admission decision. Please refer to the Admission Guidelines for more information about the admissions process. Note that while we ask you to indicate the faculty member(s) whose research program interests you the most, our policy is to accept students into our graduate training program rather than accepting them into a particular professor's lab. Upon admission, students are initially assigned to a provisional faculty advisor. Upon arrival, new graduate students have the opportunity to meet each of the faculty members and learn what they are doing. During the first semester, new graduate students are able to make a more informed choice about which faculty member's lab to join; many remain with the initial advisor, but some select a different advisor at that time. During the admission process, we specifically look for students whose interests match reasonably well with two or more of the faculty at MSU. This increases your chances of finding a faculty member whose interests fit well with yours. We hope our program will fit your interests and that you will apply. We wish you the best of luck in the admissions process as well as your future graduate career! |
